Essay
The habits we repeat long enough stop feeling like behaviors and begin to feel like the self.
A pattern begins as a response. Something happens, we interpret it, we act, and the consequence teaches the nervous system what to expect next time.
Repeat that loop long enough and the behavior disappears into personality. The person no longer says, 'I avoid conflict.' He says, 'I am just easygoing.' She no longer says, 'I use control to feel safe.' She says, 'I am responsible.'
The work of formation begins when we recover enough awareness to separate the self from the loop.
